ACCOMMODATION

One of the most important decisions you will make regarding your time studying in a foreign country is where to live. It is important to choose where will make you happy and comfortable because it acts as your home away from home, and you may choose to live there for several years.

HALLS OF RESIDENCE

Halls of residence are provided by the university. They are course provider-owned premises designed to accommodate a large number of students. However, applying for university accommodation is a lengthy process that often takes weeks with no guarantee of getting your first choice. They are mostly reserved for first years and it is highly recommended that you consider to stay in this type of accommodation in your first year because it has easy access to campus, mix with other people and allow you to settle into the country better. They are also cheap and convenient. You will need to apply for a place in halls of residence through your chosen course provider’s accommodation office and this can be easily done online.

Universities often separate undergraduate students residence from post graduate students residence. Men and women usually live in the same residence as well although most universities separate them. A university residence normally consist of a room that will include bed, wardrobe, desk with a light and a storage space. You can also get an en-suite rooms or a room with shared facilities (toilets, showers, laundry or kitchen) and the cost varies depending on the type of accommodation. Some halls of residence may also have sporting and social facilities, libraries, tutoring, computer facilities, and communal areas, such as, kitchen or dining area where you can interact with other students. This type of accommodation is usually overseen by a resident member of the university to ensure the welfare and safety of the students.

OFF-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION

Many students resides in properties owned by private landlords. After the first year, many students choose to live off campus in a shared house with a friend. This does not mean that fresh students don’t also stay off-campus, they do, it depends on their choice. There is a wide selection of privately owned accommodation. This range from individual rooms with shared facilities, shared houses suitable for groups, self-contained flats to large private halls. You will have your own room but will be sharing the kitchen and usually, the bathroom. You will split all bills with the other students you decide to share the apartment with. The cost will vary depending on where you choose stay, and some apartment comes with a range of facilities like a gym, game room, TV lounges, laundry room, and security. It is also possible to live alone without sharing the apartment, provided you can afford it.

There is no need to feel worried about securing an apartment because theirs is enough to go around. It is advisable to take your time to get to know the town and the people that you may want to share with. Committing yourself into something too early could result to a very costly mistake. International students should be very careful when renting an off-campus apartment to avoid grievous mistakes. They also need to determine what their legal obligations and rent will be.

HOMESTAY

Homestay is another form of accommodation whereby students live with families that are willing to accommodate them. You rent a room from a local family close to your university. You will live, eat and share majority of your time with your host family and this offer several advantages such as, learning their lifestyle, cultural diplomacy, foreign language practise and friendship.

The terms of the homestay are generally worked out by the host and guest in advance and can include items such as the types of lodging, length of stay, housekeeping or works that are required to the performed by the guest, curfews, types of food to be provided and rules relating to smoking, drinking and drugs.
